Due to casting flash in the water galleys causing a lack of cooling, cylinders 5 & 6 (rear-most cylinders) are the most prone to detonation in the VG30DETT engine. The casting flash is so bad on some engines that the main water gallery in the vee of the engine is almost completely obstructed by the flash towards the rear of the block. This is due to core shift and the way the sand mold for the block is filled during production. It could happen again, so it would be best to have the block's central water passage ported and deburred when the motor is being rebuilt.
